The Gates of Paradise
By Ashley Riley
A trooper named Nobushige came to Hakuin, and inquired: “Is there truly a heaven and a hell?” “Who are you?” asked Hakuin.
“I am a samurai,” the warrior replied. “You, a soldier!” shouted Hakuin.
“What kind of ruler would have you as his protect? Your confront looks like that of a beggar.”
Nobushige got to be so irate that he started to draw his sword, but Hakuin proceeded: “So you have got a sword! Your weapon is likely much as well gloomy to cut off my head.” As Nobushige drew his sword Hakuin commented: “Here open the doors of hell!” At these words the samurai, seeing the master’s teach, sheathed his sword and bowed.
“Here open the entryways of paradise,” said Hakuin.
